In this course, you will learn how OPC Classic can be used to exchange data between process control system devices and applications. OPC Classic is a client-server based application. An OPC Server, such as a PLC, provides access to the data in the PLC by exposing its tag database to an OPC client, such as an HMI application.
The method for configuring the client and server applications is presented through the use of examples, using an OPC simulation server. The concepts of Tagname, Value, Time Stamp, and Quality for each piece of data shared are developed along with Data Groups and update frequencies.
The OPC server simulator and various client applications are used to demonstrate the configuration and execution of data exchange between PC stations and devices, such as PLCs. Finally, collecting data from an OPC server in Microsoft Excel is demonstrated.
